What We Do: Service Scope

We service Yamaha, Mercury, and Suzuki outboards from 70 HP to 500+ HP.

All work is performed to manufacturer specifications using OEM parts and professional diagnostic equipment.

Outboard Diagnostics & Troubleshooting

  • No-start and intermittent starting — cranks without firing, no crank, random failures
  • Engine alarm diagnosis — CHECKENGINE, overtemp, oil pressure, rev-limiter activation
  • Rough idle, stalling, hesitation, or loss of power at WOT
  • Overheating — cooling system failure, water pump, thermostat, tell-tale issues
  • Charging issues — battery not holding charge, erratic voltage, stator/rectifier failure
  • Fuel delivery problems — symptoms-based troubleshooting of fuel system components
  • Electrical faults — corrosion, bad grounds, switch failures, wiring issues

Scheduled Outboard Maintenance

  • Annual service — engine oil and filter, gear lube, spark plugs, fuel filter, full inspection
  • 100-hour service — full scheduled maintenance per manufacturer interval
  • Water pump and impeller replacement — critical every 100 hours or annually for prevention
  • Lower unit service — gear lube flush, seal inspection, pressure test
  • Fuel filter replacement (inline and VST filter where applicable)
  • Throttle and shift cable inspection and lubrication
  • Engine flush and fogging for seasonal storage

Outboard Repairs

  • Cooling system repair — water pump housing, thermostat, hose replacement
  • Fuel system repair — primer bulb, fuel line, low-pressure pump (where accessible dockside)
  • Ignition system — coil, CDI, rectifier, and related components
  • Starting system — starter motor, solenoid, flywheel-related issues
  • Charging system — stator, voltage regulator, battery cables
  • Control and rigging — throttle/shift cable adjustment and replacement
  • Lower unit repair assessment — we will advise on dockside scope vs. shop requirement

Our technician connects the manufacturer diagnostic software, performs the service or troubleshooting procedure, and completes work on-site when possible. If parts are needed, we confirm availability before a return visit.

At the end of the visit you receive a clear verbal and written summary of what was serviced, what was found, what was repaired, and what to monitor going forward. Service records are important — we take them seriously.

Why Boat Owners Choose SMS Marine Service

Factory Authorization for Yamaha, Mercury & Suzuki

Factory Authorization for Yamaha, Mercury & Suzuki

Factory Authorization for Yamaha, Mercury & Suzuki

We are not a general marine mechanic using guesswork. Our technicians are factory-trained and use the manufacturer's own diagnostic software, procedures, and OEM parts. Your engine is serviced correctly and your warranty remains intact.

OEM Diagnostics, Not Guesswork

Factory Authorization for Yamaha, Mercury & Suzuki

We connect the actual manufacturer diagnostic system to your engine before recommending a repair. This eliminates the replace-and-hope approach and ensures we fix the right thing the first time.

Same Turnaround as a Shop — Without the Haul

Not every outboard repair can be done dockside. If your engine needs a lower unit rebuild, powerhead work, or parts requiring significant lead time, we tell you that upfront — and help you understand what the realistic next step is.

Most scheduled services are completed in a single dockside visit. Diagnostic appointments typically identify the issue in one visit, with parts follow-up scheduled efficiently. We arrive prepared.

Service Records You Can Count On

Same Turnaround as a Shop — Without the Haul

Licensed, Insured & Warranty-Backed

We document what was performed, what was found, and what was recommended. This matters for warranty claims, resale value, and knowing when your next service intervals are due.

Every repair is performed by licensed technicians. Our work is covered, and we stand behind what we do. If something is not right, we come back and make it right.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at smsmarine@hotmail.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

We service Yamaha, Mercury, and Suzuki outboards. Our technicians are factory-authorized for these brands, meaning we use the manufacturer's diagnostic tools, OEM parts, and service procedures.

Yes. That is our core offering. We arrive at your marina or dock with the equipment and parts to perform diagnostic work and scheduled service on-site. Confirm your marina name and slip when you request a quote.

Yamaha, Mercury, and Suzuki all recommend water pump impeller replacement every 100 hours of operation or once per year — whichever comes first. In Florida's year-round boating environment, annual replacement is standard even for lighter users. A failed impeller causes engine overheating, which can result in major damage.

Not when service is performed to manufacturer specifications using OEM parts — which is exactly how we operate. We are factory-authorized technicians. Retain your service documentation as proof of compliant maintenance.

Yes. We carry the manufacturer's diagnostic software for Yamaha, Mercury, and Suzuki. We connect to your engine's computer, pull fault codes, and diagnose the root cause on-site — the same process a dealership uses.

Engine brand (Yamaha, Mercury, or Suzuki), model/HP rating, approximate hours on the engine, your location (marina and slip), and a description of the symptoms or the specific service you need.
